Marianne Lovink and Penny Dimos at Archive The gifted Toronto sculptor Marianne Lovink one again creates garden of earthly delights. Green-and yellow leaves grow from basket-like sculptures of curved steel wire, entitled Nest Egg and Tumbleweed. In her Horn series, small groupings of carved and polished basswood tusks sprout tear-shaped buds of red, green, blue and yellow resin. In the Ulna series, two similarly jeweled wooden pods nestle together with exquisitely underplayed eroticism. By contrast, the sculptures by Toronto artist Penny Dimos are deeply philosophic, with black her non-colour of choice. In one representative piece, two engraved crystal balls, one bearing the word "Logos," the other "Eros," are suspended side by side inside two black rubber thongs. Using polished black obsidian stone, she pairs "Anima" with "Animus," and "Giveth" with "Taketh Away," creating provocative balancing acts out of eternal dualities. -G.M.
